It's absolutely amazing how no one ever seems to mention that recreational players are not cattle. They are depositing people that can just as well not deposit.
The look of the heads up lobby has been a problem for many years. A problem I have argued they should address for a very long time. KOTH did not address it at all. The lobby still had the exact same look regardless of whether 20 people or 40 people were sitting alone at a stake. While I am sure a better solution is out there, for once, the current best model is on Party where the lobby shows one table, but all can sit alone displayed like a sub-folder of people to choose from to the one table.
Back to my initial point. FTP has been run into the ground and has collapsed as a site entirely because of changes meant to 'reduce the predatory environment'. All the talk the last months has been along these lines mixed with how recreational players stay longer at game X compared with heads up.
What the discussion and their 'research' completely ignores is that there are many recreational players that LIKE AND DEPOSIT TO PLAY HEADS UP. That recreational players want choice just as much as anyone else, if not more since they aren't as laser focused on their specialty as a pro. By removing their choices, as FTP did, they removed a large percentage of their depositing player base. You can't just treat them like brain dead sheep that you can herd into whatever game format you want. Instead, many will quit the site altogether when removing the games they enjoy. Zoom heads up is not very enjoyable precisely because it takes away the entire fun of heads up for the vast majority of people that like heads up poker. Turning it into even more of a GTO fest where it isn't at all about the interaction and meta game between two people is not what 90% of recreational players want. That is why so few play zoom heads up. It simply isn't as fun to most recreational players and isn't why the majority of people enjoy the game type.
I personally moved on from heads up some time ago and barely play anymore at all but this decision will resonate to all games, and as others have correctly pointed out, is bad for almost everyone but the absolute best few players. It will only make the site even worse and more predatory in practice rather than in simple aesthetics.
The REAL problem with the online poker experience has been the result of the evolution of the industry into such a profession filled with very well studied and highly skilled players. There is likely no 'solution' to this issue which is why I've been arguing that aesthetic changes are really mostly what can be done instead of removing choices and game types though obviously things can be done to improve benefits for depositing players. Hell, I'd even argue trying to constantly add and promote new game types in order to keep pros from having so much experience is a much more useful approach than removing things. With every change, Stars is turning poker even more into chess. Into a game where there is a pure ranking system. Where only the grand masters can play online.
There is a reason online chess is extremely popular yet online chess for money is non existent. PLAYERS WANT TO PLAY PEOPLE OF VARYING SKILL LEVELS. This goes for recreational players as well. All these changes do is continue to make the skill level of the opponents of depositing players even higher. You want a terrible eco system for recreational players? Do exactly what you are doing the last few months and continue pushing a system that now leaves a new depositing player with a lobby full of 'grand masters' as their only choice of game type. Yes, it was already getting worse and worse over the years because the average skill level of the reg has gone up while a new player stays the same but all this does is warp speed the average reg into a far higher level and greatly harming the depositing player as a result.
What is so upsetting about this is that we all know Amaya does not deserve the benefit of the doubt when making a 'business' decision where we all assume it very likely is what is best for the growth of the site as we would for Stars five years ago. We have witnessed them driving FTP into the ground. Amaya did this with another site in the past (was it microgaming?). They can very easily destroy the size of the online poker market since Stars is so dominant which hurts them and all players as well. The size and health of the online poker pool is not predetermined or static. If you make it really impossible for a depositing player to win money, that word spreads. The interest in playing can go down altogether.
The ideal, which I am sure is quite tricky and can best be attempted from various ideas, should be a site where depositing players can play any game type they want and have a lot of choice in who they play as well. 'Bumhunting' has been a bad thing for online poker but an unavoidable evolution of a money game becoming a profession. The solutions should never be to remove choice but instead to just make the playing experience and lobby as clean looking as possible without removing the ability to play a wide range of players. Herding the new players into a very narrow set of game options is going to make their experience worse, and as with FTP, drive players off of the site.
cliffs: yet another indication that Amaya just doesn't get it.
